Puppy Season Came Early This Year!

Usually we have a lot of puppies in the spring but we've actually taken in quite a few this winter. We have several adorable puppies that are almost ready for adoption, please email info@takemehomepetrescue.com for more info or to request an application. For young puppies we prefer to adopt to homes where someone is home quite a bit to help with housetraining and basic training, thanks!

Tank, Boomer and Trevor were rescued from a neglectful situation. Their previous owner made them live outside in the backyard with no shelter. Their mom dug a trench to keep them warm. Fortunately a neighbor intervened and rescued them when they were about 7 weeks old. They are thriving in their loving foster home where they get to play with other dogs, cats and kids. The puppies were born around early October and are now neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and ready to go to loving homes.

We also have a few adorable lab mix puppies. They were born at the Dallas shelter to a sweet momma dog named Lucy on November 1. The puppies were raised in a loving foster home and are now ready for adoption. There were eight in the litter, we still have a few that are available: Peyton, Maryann and Gilligan.

Sheldon's ready for his first Christmas

On Dec 9, 2011, we received a plea for help for a homeless momma dog that had recently given birth to puppies in an industrial area of Dallas. The temps were in the 30s so JP and I went out to rescue them as soon as possible.

Around 8pm, we found a stairwell covered in blankets. JP carefully sifted through them and then found the mom tucked up against the wall. She had somewhat dug herself into the ground to try to keep her babies and herself warm.

Normally a dog's "flight" response kicks in but she just froze. She was trembling, probably from cold and fear. JP carefully slipped the leash over her head and we were able to take Momma and her 2 babies home.

We've named the momma dog Maya. She is absolutely beautiful and has such soulful eyes. We named the puppies Leonard & Sheldon, they are fat and happy! And yes, they are named after our favorite characters in the tv show The Big Bang Theory!

Maya is starting to settle in and now wags her tail when JP goes in to check on them. Poor Maya had probably never known a day of love up until now. If you've never fostered a former street dog, we highly recommend you add it to your "bucket list." It is one of the most rewarding things you can do. You get to show them that there are nice people in this world. You get to be the first to take them in as a family member and show them love. You get to watch them blossom as they get comfortable with you and their new surroundings. Then the bittersweet moment will come when the loving family they deserved all along adopts them and you know that you helped prepare them for that moment and the dog is going on to live a wonderful life because of your selflessness.

Cricket's Christmas Wish

Cricket was rescued from an abandoned house, along with her eight young puppies. A night security guard at a local stripmall noticed her coming out at night to scavange for food. He befriended her and we actually tried getting to her before she had the pups but were too late so then we had the daunting task of trying to find them. Miraculously she raised them all on her own for 3 weeks before we found them hidden in the floorboards of a nearby abandoned house. All of the puppies survived and have now been adopted. Now it's Cricket's turn to find a loving home of her own!

Cricket is a very happy-go-lucky dog who absolutely adores people! She loves to go on walks, play fetch, play with her toys and her favorite thing of all is cuddling on the couch. She's about 2 yrs old, 40 lbs, is housetrained and knows basic commands and has good house manners.

Since she spent the first part of her life all on her own without anyone loving on her, we've noticed she prefers to get all the attention herself instead of sharing the limelight with other pets so will do best as an only dog. Ten dogs saved from one Oak Cliff neighborhood

We are thrilled to report that 10 homeless dogs are no longer living on the streets of Oak Cliff! In August, Karla Kirk contacted JP Bonnelly regarding a stray dog that had recently given birth to puppies. They survived weeks in the 100 degree weather. The two puppies, now named Daisy & Devin were the first of the ten to be rescued. They are available for adoption through TMHPR.

Next in line was their mom. The neighborhood folks that had been feeding the dogs nicknamed them "Boy" and "Girl." JP, Pat and Karla were able to catch the momma dog using a trap. Our friends at the Humane Society of Flower Mound had a foster home so they took her into their group. She actually ended up also being named Daisy.

We often found "Boy" hanging out at the car wash trying to cool off

When "Girl" was caught that spooked "Boy" so we had to wait and try to get him another day. He spent a lot of time at the car wash as the guys there fed him and he liked to cool off in the bays. JP tried using the trap again but "Boy" came by and peed on it so I guess he told us what he thought of that idea after we had taken his family away!

He proved to be a very elusive dog! We tried trapping him in one of the car wash bays by using makeshift fences and netting but he was too quick and we tried all sorts of other ideas too. I can't even tell you how many times JP, Pat, Yvonne and myself went to that awful neighborhood to try and catch Boy, it was several times per week for months on end. Of course Boy wasn't the only stray dog in the area. JP and TMHPR get a lot of requests to rescue stray dogs. We would love to save them all but before we go and get them our agreement is we have to have a place lined up for them to go. The family fostering Girl/Daisy was also willing to foster Boy so that's why we were so determined to catch him.

So he kept luring us out there and it was so sad to see all the stray dogs so we started picking them up one at a time and squeezing them into our homes even though we already had full houses.

The first "extra" stow-a-way was a cute little brown dog that we named Callie. She was part of a pack of brown dogs we'd seen hanging around and on Aug 18th we noticed her hanging out with a little scruffy chi. They were near a busy street (Jefferson) and it was dark out and we were worried they'd get hit by a car. JP had just gotten a new tool for our street dog rescues-a giant butterfly net! So we started luring the dogs over by throwing them pieces of chicken and as they started to trust us we set the net down on the ground. Then we dropped some pieces of chicken on the net and when Callie stepped on it JP scooped her up! The surprising thing about Callie is she was spayed and microchipped which is unheard of in these types of neighborhoods. We fulfilled our legal obligation and called the owners and they didn't even know she was missing! Fortunately they did not want her back, whew!

The next one was another from the pack of brown dogs. On Sept 10th, she was just laying along the side of the road and looked like a puppy so I told JP and Pat that I was going to try and get her and they were like "yeah, ok." You see most of the time these dogs are very skittish and hard to catch, they don't realize we're there to help. So I got lucky as she came right up to me so I just picked her up and got in the car, I think they were surprised at how fast it happened! Hazel has now been adopted by a wonderful family.

The sad part though was that the rest of the brown dogs were also right there and they're all friendly and came right up to be petted. One looked to be the mom and the other two looked to be her puppies who were probably about 6 months old at the time. We hated leaving them behind but couldn't take 4 dogs at once when we didn't have fosters lined up. We'll go back for them if we find fosters.

On Sept 21, JP and I were back at the car wash looking for Boy when a cute little big-eared puppy walked right up to him. She must know a nice person when she sees one so he scooped her up and took her home. We think she's probably related to the other brown dogs so she's the lucky one. We named her Ripley and she hit the jackpot with the Young family!

So just when you think it can't get any cuter, on Oct 5th, JP found an adorable little puppy sitting all by herself on the street corner. It was dark out so we're so glad he somehow spotted her as she is one of the best puppies we've ever had come through TMHPR. She was about 8 weeks old at the time. We named the fluffball Little Orphan Annie and the good news is she just found her forever home!

November 2nd turned out to be the big day...JP had been tracking Boy and discovered that he liked to hang out at a nearby shop. He talked to the guy that owned the place and found out he had also been feeding Boy so they were finally able to lure the dog into the shop. Once they shut the door, JP was able to corner him and loop him, woo-hoo! In the weeks leading up to the capture we had noticed Boy was hanging out with a black dog. So as JP was leaving with Boy, the other dog jumped in his lap as if to say "hey, please don't leave me behind-take me with you!" So the black dog came home too! He was named Binks after the Star Wars character and he moved in with his new family just 3 days after going home with JP!

So just when we thought that was the end of our time in Oak Cliff we were able to save one more...the guy who owned the shop showed JP another scruffy little brown dog that was hanging around.

So we welcomed her into the TMHPR family! She was heartworm positive and is currently underdoing treatment. Her loving foster family has named her Penny and they just rave about her!

So there you have it, ten dogs are no longer worrying about where their next meal will come from or trying to find shelter from the extreme heat, rain or cold. All of the dogs are now in loving foster or forever homes! The Humane Society of Flower Mound took Boy and Girl. The other eight are TMHPR dogs.

Two were male and the other eight were female. Had we not intervened, each of the female dogs had the potential to produce two litters each year, well since Callie was spayed that would have left a possibility of 14 litters each year! Those that survived puppyhood would have lived sad, short, desperate lives on the streets or they'd end up at the full animal shelter where less than 30% of the dogs entering make it out alive. We hope that helps people further understand the importance of spay/neuter!

Right Place at the Right Time

Today I stopped by the Dallas shelter to check on a stray dog that a friend found on the way to work the other day. She's already fostering a mom with eight, three-week old puppies so couldn't risk bringing home another dog so was sadly out of options so had to bring the dog there for now. We're working on getting a foster so we can get him out once his stray hold is up.

So anyways, as we were pulling up we saw a couple walking into the shelter with a cute heeler pup in tow. As they opened the door to go in the pup put on the brakes and sat down and it was heartbreaking to watch them tug her leash and pull her inside. She definitely seemed to know what was happening to her. They had even brought along her favorite stuffed animal and a bone for her to chew on so it was obvious that she meant a lot to them.

Last spring I fostered a stray dog named Norah and her nine puppies. Norah's puppy Kinsey looks identical to this poor pup that was being surrendered so I had to check out the situation. We learned that the family has 3 young kids, including twin 4 yr old boys and they're living in apt and it sounds like it was just a bit too much. It sounds like the kids played kind of rough with the pup so we'll work on re-introducing her to kids where she'll have positive interactions with them. The family got the dog when she was 8 weeks old, she's now 16 weeks.

They definitely love her, the guy cried as he told me that they felt so bad giving her up and it was a tearful goodbye as he hugged and kissed the pup for the last time. As they drove away she tried going after them, it was very heartbreaking but I assured them we'd take her in and make sure she finds a really great home. They probably had no idea that less than 30% of the pets entering that shelter make it out alive. We were definitely in the right place at the right time and are very thankful that this little pup is now safe and part of the TMHPR family.

As soon as we got in the car she was wanting to sit in my lap so she definitely warmed up quickly! I've named her Kenzie as she reminds me so much of Kinsey, she is absolutely adorable and is very sweet and well-mannered. She got a clean bill of health at the vet today and will be spayed on Nov 28 and then she'll be ready for adoption so please email info@takemehomepetrescue.com to request an application, thanks!

Marley is a handsome, 60 lb dog that we saved from a local shelter 30 minutes before he was scheduled to be euthanized. Sadly he got lost, the shelter notified his owner that he was there but the owner never came to get him. Well, it's his loss and Marley's gain as now he's on his way to a much better life and we will make sure he finds an outstanding family that will love and cherish him. He's about 3 yrs old. Marley is housetrained, great with other dogs and is very friendly and loving.

Charlotte was another lucky pup that was saved the day she was going to be killed at a local shelter for being "too shy." Well a shelter can be a very scary place so we are thrilled we found a loving foster family that stepped up to save this precious pup. As of Nov 20, Charlotte is about 7 months old and weighs 33 lbs. She will be ready for adoption at the beginning of December so email info@takemehomepetrescue.com to request your application. She's a very sweet, curious, playful pup!

Buddy is a handsome lab/boxer mix. He goes to daycare several times per week and loves to play with the other dogs! He's housetrained and knows basic commands too!

Danny was rescued from a local shelter after he ended up on the euthanasia list because of a broken leg. Thanks to the support of donors, we were able to take Danny in and pay for his surgery to fix his leg. He is recovering nicely and is happy to be in a loving foster home. Meet Olive, the littlest black dog...

The wonderful Dallas shelter staff and volunteers posted pictures and video of this dog that was in urgent need of rescue on Nov 9, at the time she only weighed 10.4 pounds and you could see every bone in her body. On Nov 10th we found a foster so welcomed this severely emaciated dog, Olive, into Take Me Home Pet Rescue! She will live in a loving foster home where she will receive tons of TLC.

She will also have top notch veterinary care from the folks at Breckinridge Park Animal Hospital. Once she recovers and gains weight and is healthy we will place her up for adoption in the Dallas, TX area. Olive is anemic and also has a bad care of worms so she's being treated for those things. We're also feeding her special food from the vet and her awesome foster mom Jenny has been cooking a lot of chicken and rice (Olive's favorite foods)!

Updates from Jenny:

Olive day 1. Not sure where to begin. This is the most beautiful, fragile, gentle creature. She is weak. Walking better than in the original video, but tires quickly. Her appetite is good naturally. The pictures of her are frightening, but I wasn't prepared for how horrifying she is to the touch. Every rib, every bone, even her tail, you can feel every bit of cartilage. I'm carrying her most of the time it seems. She came to work with me today and boy was she the most popular girl in the building. She loved everyone she met. And everyone loved her too. A handful of people cried when they saw her. Literally cried. Poor Jackie cried for about 45 minutes. She loves her new bed and her new "jacket" for warmth, and padding more importantly. We had a successful meeting with the rest of the family this afternoon. Everyone sensed her fragility and after sniffs, they gave her space. Smart dogs. Tonight after dinner, we curl up on the sofa by the fire and hunker down and cuddle. Miss Olive had a big day, I think she's worn out. Tonight with a full belly, safe and warm she will dream happy puppy things. And tomorrow...another day closer to full health and a wonderful life.

Olive day 2...2pm. Vet called this morning and she has hookworms. She's also anemic. Doc says this is contributing to the weakness. But we got the pills this morning and the worms will soon be gone. She can go down the stairs but not up. She tries however. She is a SLOPPY drinker. Water everywhere. She also talks. Very funny. A few accidents in the house cause she doesn't know how to tell me she has to go out. Just easily stopped one, she'll learn. Follows me everywhere, motors around all the dogs, then climbs back into her bed when she peters out. Falling in love fast, but keeping my "foster" head on so I can help another one day. Yep, that's what I keep telling myself...oy.

From Mom...5:20am. Third time we've been up tonight. Why? Because someone wanted to cuddle, someone wanted to talk to the weird dog (cat), someone had to do their biz, and someone wanted a snack. I'm gonna be useless today, but there's a very happy little black dog who is starting to resemble a real puppy.

Olive Day 3...From Mom...The little black dog is doing really well. She's eating like a champ. Chicken and rice mixed with wet and dry food from the vet and a little water are not making anything worse. And have mercy, she loves her chicken! She's motoring around the yard and has navigated the deck pretty well. She's had a very busy day at the park, and visiting with Shannon. She's currently lounging in her squishy bed...looks like she's contemplating a nap. She never lets me out of her sight and follows me everywhere, constantly under foot. No accidents in the house today. If it's possible, she gets sweeter every minute. And her personality is starting to come to light. This is an amazing little dog, with an amazing little spirit.

While looking for suspects in a creek in Garland, a few Garland Police Officers came across the two dogs bound up on a piece of rebar. The officers knew that the dogs would starve, or drown in the next rain, if they didn’t get them out so they jumped into action.

All of the ropes in the picture were tied to the little female Chihuahua and the male scruffy puppy was tethered to the pink and red leashes and they were all tangled up around the rebar sticking up from a piece of concrete in the creek. You can see this in the photo. It appears that they were tied together when they escaped, and then one went under the rebar and one went over and they got stuck. They were several feet from the creek, so it doesn’t appear someone tried to drown them. There were a couple piles of waste near the dogs, as if they had been tangled there for awhile.

We are very thankful the Garland Police stopped to rescue these two lucky pups on October 19th. The puppy is only about 8 weeks old and can brag to his friends that he's already ridden in a squad car! Then it's on to Lee Harvey's where the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers is hosting the Third Annual Dog Day Afternoon. The address is 1807 Gould Street, Dallas. There will be raffle drawings and a "best costume" contest for the dogs dressed in costume. While viewing all the entertaining pet costumes, attendees will enjoy live onstage music. Admission to the event is $15.00, which includes 2 drinks tickets.

Sisters Daisy & Devin will be at Lee Harvey's hoping to find forever families. Earhound Ripley is also hoping to find a loving home and will also be at Lee Harvey's. All three were rescued from the same rough neighborhood and are thriving in their loving foster homes!

Scooter is another lucky pup that was rescued from the streets of Dallas. He is about seven months old and will make appearances at II Creeks and Lee Harvey's.

Oliver is a three month old pup that was rescued when a neighbor kid was walking him with a 5 pound choker on him looking to give him away. Fortunately our friend Karen intervened and took him in, he is a Cairn Terrier mix so won't get too big.

Norah is the wonderful momma dog that was rescued from the streets of Dallas this past Spring. People told us they fed her for over four years while she lived in a drainage ditch in a median at the busy intersection of 175/Buckner. When we rescued her she had nine newborn puppies who have all been adopted by amazing families! Norah will be at Lee Harvey's if you'd like to stop by and meet her!

Our cats will also be looking for homes this weekend! They will be at the Petsmart at the NW corner of Coit/Campbell from 11-4 on Saturday and from 12-4 on Sunday.

Saving Norah

We rescued Norah and her nine newborn puppies on March 26, 2011. She did a great job raising the puppies and is a wonderful, sweet momma dog. A few of them are still in her foster home and she lets them climb all over her and also loves to chase them in the yard, play tug-of-war and does a special trick where she tries to fit their head into her mouth. She is now having the time of her life.

When we rescued her back in March, she was skin and bones and in rough shape. After weaning the puppies, we treated her for a painful tick-related disease called Ehrlichia. Then when she had her spay surgery on July 8 they found a lump and we are saddened and heart-broken to report that our wonderful girl, Norah, has cancer. This poor dog just can't catch a break.

Life is not fair. She lived in a ditch, homeless, for 4 years and has finally found people who love and care for her and now this happens to her.

Initially they thought she'd only have 3-8 months to live but further tests show the cancer is a form called TVT. The statistics show that 90% of dogs that go through chemotherapy have a good outcome so we're really hoping that for once Norah is on the right side of the odds. She will go for weekly chemo sessions for 6-8 weeks and the estimated cost is $1500. She had her first round on July 15 and I'm happy to report that so far she seems to be feeling ok, she even felt up to playing with the puppies when we got home. Hopefully we'll get good news in a few weeks that the chemo is working.

Meet a real life Super Hero...Shanna found these dogs in a hotel parking lot in Houston while on a business trip in May. They were starving and covered with fleas and Lady, the baby, had a rope tied around her neck that was very tight. Shanna tried to find a place in Houston to take them but because she did not have a resident ID no shelter would accept them so she took them back to the Dallas area and started looking for help. She found TMHPR through the internet and asked if we could help. She agreed to self foster them so we were able to take them into our group. Both are spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.

They are both very sweet and easy going. Lexi who is 12 months old is very smart and obedient and a very affectionate dog. Lady, who is a four month old puppy, is wonderful too, and very energetic. Both will make great family pets and are good with other dogs and likely cats too and kids. Ginger (scruffy one) and Lacey are sisters that were recently saved from the Collin County Animal Shelter.

Violet and Rose came to us as owner surrenders. Their previous owner wanted to breed dogs and then quickly realized she didn't know what she was doing so the poor pups ended up living on the apartment patio. We are glad that they're now safe in a loving foster home and on their way to a better life. They are six-months old and are purebred Shih Tzus. Rose is the tan/white and Violet is the black/white pup. Please don't breed your dogs, so many are dying in shelters and we don't need anymore coming into this world!

Sam Bass was rescued from the Denton animal shelter. He's in a foster home with kids and does great with them, also does great at the dog park and knows basic commands and will make a fantastic addition to your family.

Brownie is a wonderful little trooper that was rescued from the Garland shelter in January when she was pregnant. She had six puppies on Feb 7 and did a great job raising them and we're happy to report that Brownie was recently adopted by a loving family!

Here's what they had to say..."just wanted to keep you updated. Brownie had a great day. She went to bed with Avery last night and burrowed in to the foot of the bed during story time. Troy was at the stadium late. When he came home she greeted him at the door and then went back to bed with Avery. When I checked in she was under the covers with her head sharing the pillow with Avery.

Today she spunked up and has run around the yard and played with toys. We went for a walk and she was happy with that. Brownie and the cat are buddies there was no hissing or chasing. In fact they slept side by side in the sun and share the dog bed. She is an awesome dog and we feel blessed to have her our family's life. I truly believe that the best pets choose you. She did that day we came to see you. Our neighbors have fallen in love with her, Avery went to show her off. Avery dressed her up in a feather boa and tutu and she is such a doll. Thank you for saving her life so she could be with us."

Cricket is the wonderful momma dog that we rescued from an abandoned house back in August. She had 8 little puppies that were about 3-4 weeks old at the time, she did a great job taking care of them in a rough area of town during weeks of 100 degree weather. She is one of the most loving dogs you will ever meet and is sure to make you smile, everyone that meets her loves her dearly yet she hasn't been adopted yet. She must be holding out for someone really special, maybe it's you?!

Brownie is a sweetheart that was rescued from the Garland shelter when pregnant. She raised 6 healthy pups in foster care and now is adoption pending, way to go Brownie!

Lucy did a great job raising her kittens and they've been adopted so we hope she'll be next!

Happy is happy that her kittens got adopted and she'll be even happier when her forever family adopts her!

Precious and her newborn puppies were rescued from the bushes outside the Cliff Manor housing facility on March 22. She's a great momma and is doing great in foster care. She's going through heartworm treatment but will be ready for adoption soon (you can still email us now though for info on adopting her).

Norah and her nine newborn puppies were rescued from the bushes outside a Church on March 26. The entire family is available for adoption. From what we were told, people fed Norah for 3-4 years when she lived on the streets of Dallas. We are so happy we were able to rescue her and her puppies. She's been a very tender and loving momma dog. She is very sweet and gentle and likes to be petted and cuddle with her foster mom. It just goes to show how resilient these dogs can be and that they just need some TLC to thrive!

Look Who's Ready for Adoption!

In mid-March we took in a litter of six female pups that were found abandoned on the side of the road. One has been adopted and we have five that are ready to find their forever homes. As you can see Auggie has made herself right at home with her new family! Here's the update from the Robinson's: "Auggie is a VERY happy puppy. She LOVES her little brother Harley. She plays so good with him…she is gentle despite his terrorizing her! They really enjoy each other’s company. She is digging huge holes, chasing squirrels... and barking at the gate when there is any activity on the street. We walk them almost every night. She’s going to obedience classes at Petsmart every Saturday. She’s learning quickly. We are trying to stop the “hugs” until she’s asked. You know as well and I do that if she catches you off guard she can knock someone over. I’ve taken her to the retirement home where my mother lives and I don’t want her to knock down any of the residents…since they just love her. We had a huge family reunion at my house this past weekend and EVERYONE loved her. Everyone always asks what breed she is because she’s so unique. We just love her. She thinks she’s a lap dog which is the funniest thing."

Update on the Momma Dog and Puppies Rescued on 3/22

We want to thank Susie and Reuben for jumping right in and fostering this cute little family, they are lifesavers! They have named the momma dog Precious and as you can see in the pictures she looks like she's a million times happier now that she's safe and in foster care instead of living out on the streets of SW Dallas, fending for herself and her young family. It's so heartwarming to see a dog that was so scared, warm up so quickly now that she's getting a lot of love and TLC. Susie and Reuben have also been helping her out by bottle-feeding the five puppies who are about 10 days old now. We'll continue to post updates and more pictures as they grow up, thanks!

You may recall that earlier this week on 3/22 we were able to rescue a stray momma dog and her litter of newborn puppies...now we've done the same thing again on 3/26! We are on major puppy overload and desperately need financial support as well as fosters (once they're old enough to be weaned). It costs a lot to get each puppy fully vetted so this is a huge undertaking to have so many puppies in our program at the same time. We will later recoup some of our expenses via adoption fees and then that money can be used towards future dogs/puppies/cats that come through our program so please donate via this link and share with your friends. Ok so back to the latest rescue, about a month ago we learned of a stray dog named Norah that's been living in a drainage ditch near 175/Buckner. We've gone out to try and catch her the past several weekends and several folks that live in that area have stopped to tell us they've been feeding her for a few years, yep, you ready correctly years! So as you can imagine she's very street-smart and has proven herself to be quite difficult to catch.

We tried using a trap baited with chicken but she wouldn't go near that. Then JP pulled a MacGyver move and crafted something to slide down in the drainage hole so she couldn't go back so far, tied rope to it and waited patiently for her to go in the hole and then we were going to try and trap her in it but we never got that plan to work either.

About 1-2 weeks ago we started to notice she looked a bit bigger so were worried she may be pregnant but weren't really sure. But yesterday when we saw her she looked noticably thinner so we realized she must have been pregnant and must have had the puppies since we last saw her on 3/20. We'd also noticed that she spends time hanging out at the nearby House of Prayer so JP started looking through the bushes and found them hidden up against the wall of the Church, 9 pups total. As you could have guessed Norah took off but we were lucky that the pups were in a courtyard area of a manageable size to try and contain her. So we baited a trap with a few of her puppies, got back in the car and waited for her to show back up.

About 2 hrs later she came back to the courtyard so JP was able to shut the gate and I guarded the fence to try and scare her back into the courtyard if she tried to get out. Fortunately JP was able to loop her!

So now we're happy to report that Norah and her 9 babies are safe and off the streets. However, sadly as soon as we caught her we saw 2 more stray dogs show up, ugh. Over the past few months of trying to catch Norah we've seen an additional 13 dogs hanging around that area, none of the males are neutered and most of the girls look to be pregnant or nursing, sigh. Some of these dogs have collars and we think one of the other momma dogs belongs to someone as we've followed her back to one particular house and even saw one of her puppies just hanging out in the front yard (loose). Apparently they're not feeding the mom dog as everytime we've been out there we've seen her out crossing the busy roads looking for food, it's so sad. We really need more fosters and we need people to spay/neuter and care properly for their pets! So while we're frustrated by neighborhoods like that, we are relieved and happy that Norah and her 9 puppies have been saved and will go on to live long and happy lives thanks to your support.

Another exciting rescue-we have a new momma dog and puppies!

Yesterday we were contacted by a good samaritan named Susie about a stray momma dog that gave birth to puppies over the weekend under a bush at the Cliff Manor housing facility in North Oak Cliff.

Susie learned that the momma had hidden the pups in the bushes outside the shelter and was worried that as they got old enough to be mobile they would get hit by a car or fall into the wrong hands. It should be noted that JP Bonnelly and TMHPR get numerous requests for help with stray dogs but the reason we were able to spring into action so quickly was because Susie offered to foster, so since we had a place for them to go JP and I went out there last night to catch the little family!

When we first arrived on the scene we found momma and crew tucked up under the bushes. JP tried looping her with the leash but she got scared and took off. We then placed a few of her puppies in a trap, along with some chicken strips to try and lure her in.

When momma dog came back she was happy to see a guy named Gabriel that lives at the shelter. She came up to him wagging her tail and even rolled over for a belly rub. This was the first time she let him pet her so that was great. She then went and rolled around in the grass for a bit and decided to lay down and wait us out.

Then another resident named Gary decided to give it a try so walked up to her and he was also able to pet her and she rolled over for another belly rub! JP was working on getting a leash to Gary so he could loop it around her neck but the next thing we knew Gary grabbed her legs and was picking her up! So JP rushed in and was able to get the leash around her neck, she was spooked so tried to get away but JP held onto her, whew! It was a great team effort. Sidenote, rarely does this happen where a scared dog will suddenly let people pet her for the first time while we're out there trying to catch the dog so that was pretty wild that she did that twice. She was pretty overwhelmed last night but we know she'll come around and make a great family pet.

Momma dog is super cute and so are the puppies, when we rescued them there were four boys and four girls but sadly two passed away early this morning.

While we are saddened that we lost two of the little pups, this was a very rewarding rescue...we met so many nice folks at the shelter that came out to express their past concern and now gratitude that we were getting the little family to safety. Apparently someone had posted a sign saying they were going to fine people $25 for feeding her and animal control was also called but was unable to catch her. I wish we would have had someone there to film these folks as several talked about how even though they didn't have much for themselves, God put them on this planet along with all living creatures and they couldn't walk past an animal in need without doing something to help.

We learned that momma dog has been hanging around there for 4 months and has had several guardian angels looking after her and bringing her food. These folks are going through hard times but scraped up money to feed this beautiful momma dog. It was kind of bittersweet as they talked about how they were happy she's safe now but that they're really going to miss having her around. JP told them that we'll send them updates and pictures and will also try to go back in 6 weeks or so and bring momma and a few pups to visit.

Six Puppies Found in a Box

This week we were contacted by a good samaritan that found six puppies abandoned in a box on the side of a country road. It's a shame that we live in a society where folks toss out live animals like trash, ugh.

Fortunately help came along and where one human failed these young pups, another saved them. We have taken them into TMHPR and they are now in foster care and will be available for adoption soon. They're all girls and look to be Heeler/Shepherd mixes so will likely grow to be medium-size dogs.

Adoption event at the Stars game was a huge success!

Lynx is a beautiful Australian Shepherd that we rescued from the Denton shelter in January. She's a bit older and is sadly losing her eyesight but we were thrilled as the perfect family came along as soon as we posted her on our facebook page. We want to thank everyone that came to our fundraiser at Blackfinn last weekend. It was a beautiful day to be out on the patio and we had a great time visiting with family, friends also made a lot of new friends. Of course we also enjoyed hanging out with the dogs, especially the TMHPR alumni like Aspen, Banner and Maverick!

Thanks to you, we've now raised over $1000 as part of our Have a Heart For Homeless Dogs campaign, which is a fund that is used to treat the dogs that we take in that are heartworm positive. Just wanted to let you know how thankful I am that you got me off to such a great start so I fit in well with my new family. I have grown a lot! I'm bigger than my brother, Leo, but I'm 7 pounds lighter. (45 pounds) starting to fill out a little bit though.

I am a very loving, playful little guy! I get Leo to play with me several times a day. He has trimmed down a bit and LOVES having me for his brother. He even looks all over the house when I get to go for a walk and he has to stay home.

I am very good to walk with. I'm polite on the leash. I just LOVE to go for walks and rides in the car. When my mom tells me to go to bed, sometimes I'll go to the garage door to tell her I'd rather ride in the car with her.

I eat pretty much anything, whether it is given to me or not. Food on the counter or table us especially yummy but shoes and stuffed animals are good, too. I like squash, pickles, olives, leather...pretty much anything that can be chewed. Mom says I am a very expensive dog! I hope that since I now have all my adult teeth I won't feel like I need to chew so much. Seems to be getting better.

I am a very good guard dog. At night when it is dark and scary (sometimes daytime, too), I go outside and bark at things...or absolutely nothing. The family obviously doesn't understand. They come out and tell me to be quiet so I just stand there and bark some more. Lately, Mom has been coming out and telling me what a good job I'm doing. She is finally getting it! Then it is OK for me to come in the house. She understands the danger and I'm off duty!

I love having company. I am learning to sit when people come to visit or approach me when we are out. When people come to visit, I have to greet them with a sniff on the bottom...just like when I greet my dog friends. Mom warns everybody. Most people are ok with it since I greet and leave. Someday I might need to find a new human greeting.

Hoping to start obedience training once the holidays are over. I'm not a bad dog but me and the family can always have room for improvement in our communication.

This picture was taken while I was eating. I'll send a couple more. Mom was having a hard time getting me to hold still.

Shadow is a whole new dog!

We are thrilled to post these new pictures of Shadow! It's hard to believe it's only been 1 week since we rescued her from the cold streets of Dallas. She has come so far already and looks incredible! Her foster mom, Jane is taking great care of her and we are so thankful for Jane's kindness.

We were recently contacted by a good samaritan that noticed a dog that would come out late at night scavenging for something to eat while he worked as a night security guard at a local strip mall. This is the same good samaritan that alerted us to the dire situation this past summer of Cricket, the Wondermutt Momma dog and her puppies that were living on the streets of Dallas in the 100 degree heat.

The latest dog was freezing, starving, terrified and sadly missing a lot of fur. The dog was pretty skittish so he couldn't get very close but she slowly started warming up to Chuck as he would bring her food each night he was working security at the local strip mall. Chuck named her Shadow as she tended to slip away into the darkenss of the night.

Stray no more!

We are so thankful that the talented JP Bonnelly led the rescue attempts yet again. We went out there 2 nights last week and baited a trap with burgers and chicken strips but this poor dog wasn't going anywhere near the trap. So we went to plan B, and built a makeshift pen out of orange fencing, hoping she would "dine in" and we could shut a door and trap her in the pen, but instead this dog preferred "take out" and kept grabbing the food and dashing back out the door. It took several hours being out in the cold and wind Saturday night, but through a lot of patience, JP was able to lasso the dog around 115am Sunday! She's a real sweetheart and has been so calm and sweet once we got her. She was probably just scared and not sure she could trust us as other people may have treated her badly.

She's already been to the vet and started treatment for demodex mange and hookworms. The report from our vet on Monday is that Shadow's always wagging her tail so it seems she knows she's safe and things are looking up! She seems to do just fine with both men and women as well as dogs, but haven't cat-tested her yet. We have a temporary foster home for her until 12/23 but are looking for a foster or forever home for her. Shadow has been through a lot and we are so thankful that she's safe now and will make sure she finds the loving family she deserved all along! Looks pretty content and happy in her new home, huh?!

Elise shares the background on Jewel...a friend of mine called me a few months ago asking if we could take in this cat. She is a six year old gorgeous green eyed white Persian whose human dad had passed away and her human mom was moving into an adult living center where pets were not allowed. The owner so upset about the cat not having a home that she even considered having her put to sleep so that she did not have to worry about her not getting a good home again. We took Jewel and had her for a few months. Jewel was adopted about two weeks ago by Lauren and Cory who love her dearly and were kind enough to send us some of Jewel's happy pictures in her new home!

We renamed her Muffy. I don't know why, Cory named her and it just fits.
She responds very well to it though.

She has done a complete turn around, and she is very loving and
affectionate towards us now. We discovered that she loves Christmas
string. She is extremely playful when it comes to string. :)

Zeke is looking for his forever home

Zeke is a two year old Sheba Inu who was rescued from a local kill shelter only 15 minutes from his scheduled euthanasia. His personality is very much as described in this breed type-independent, intelligent and prey driven.

While in his foster home he is house trained and laid back. He has great manners and does not attempt to climb on furniture or jump up on people. He is happy to cuddle, be brushed and petted. He enjoys basking in the sun and lazing around in the back yard. However, when taken out on a leash he becomes the hunter and is focused on searching for whatever creature lurks in the grass or trees such as rabbits, squirrels and birds.

He is fine in a home with older children and with another low key dog but he cannot be in a home with a cat. If you are interested in adopting this amazing dog please email info@takemehomepetrescue.com .

Tonka Chuck and Jack go to school

Today we took Tonka Chuck and Jack to a school where they met 45 children grades 1-3, both dogs did just great with the kids! We were there to talk to them about rescue. Tonka and Jack are wonderful examples of how great dogs that are rescued can be!

Urgent-8 cats recently evicted after their elderly owner lost his home, please help!

We received a call from an ill and elderly man who was in the process of being evicted from his home in Garland on 10/24/10. He had contacted several rescue groups and no one had returned his desperate calls. Well, we got a message too and after letting it sit for a day I called him back to see if we could help out. Of course he was in tears that he was losing his home and also very upset about having to give up his cats that he had personally rescued. He feared taking them to the Garland Shelter knowing their fate would be death. We ended up taking 8 of the 9 cats. He is taking the 9^th cat with him and will be living in a friend’s home.

Here is a little info on the cats...

Wolfie is an 8 month old cutie Russian Blue. And he is very blue as he has lost his home suddenly without anywhere to go. He is a little shy at first but warms up right away. He is neutered and ready for a new home that he can call his own.

Sweetheart is likely a sibling of Wolfie’s. She is only about 18 months old. She is a dilute gray tabby and is very petite for her age. She is sweet and is looking for a forever home. Sweetheart is spayed and healthy and ready for her new home.

Precious is a 5 year old semi-dilute calico. She has dark orange spots and light grey spots placed delicately on her white fur. She has Betty Davis eyes and is very vocal. She will make a fabulous companion for a senior who is looking for a conversationalist and lap kitty.

Boyfriend and Babydoll are brother and sister. They are eight years old and will need to be adopted together. They are very calm and sweet and relate they “just need someone to love them forever”. They will make great pets for a quiet household.

Cassanova

Casanova is a 3 year old lover. He loves to purr and sit in your lap and enjoys just hanging out. He rolls around and says “pet my tummy”. He is not shy and will likely do well in any household.

Bandit

Bandit is a big boy. He is 4 years old and is quite a bit bigger in person than he is in his photo. He would enjoy a quiet home. He is quick to purr and is anxious to tell you about his life experiences.

Pop Tart is a baby and only 4 months old. She is a light gray tabby on white. Very unique looking kitty and very sweet. She loves to be held and purrs right away. She will make an awesome pet for a lucky family.

The elderly man was very ill and got behind by months in his rent home in Garland . He had a roommate who passed away and so he lost a portion of his rent to help pay for the house. It's important that we rally and help out this man and his cats that are down on their luck, they have been very loved and well taken care of and deserve another chance. All of the cats have been deemed healthy by our vet and have been spayed/neutered/vaccinated and microchipped. Carlee seeks loving family to call her own!

Carlee is a five month old black and white lab mix who was abandoned in a
local neighborhood along with her sisters, Lucy and Penny. They were only 8
weeks old when the were tossed over a fence in someone's backyard. Their
sad and mournful cries kept them from drowning in the pool when the owner of
the house heard them before they could fall in.

Carlee has been living in a foster home with a three year old child and
other pets. She gets along great with dogs and cats and will make a
fantastic family pet. She is house trained, crate trained, leash trained and
simple command trained too. She is energetic since she is still a puppy and
would be happiest in a home where someone is home more than not and has fun
of activities planned for her. Carlee will grow to be a medium to large dog
(our guess on weight is about 45-50 pounds when full grown).

Take Me Home Pet Rescue works very hard to be sure the pets are placed in
loving forever homes. We prefer homes where there is an adult home at least
half the day so that the puppy will not be required to stay in a crate for
long periods or be left in a back yard unsupervised as this makes for an
unhappy puppy and owner.

For more information and to request a Puppy Application email

visit and $200.00 adoption fee that covers her spay, all puppy
vaccinations, worming, flea treatment and microchipping. There is no

We all know how much dogs typically love car rides, well imagine the case when these 4 dogs jumped in the car to go for a ride out to the country only to then have their person drop them off, drive away and never look back?! Well, sadly that's what happened to Madeline and her 3 pups. The good news is that they're safe now, TMHPR took them in and we're fostering them and they are now ready for adoption.

Madeline is approximately 5 years old and is a very sweet German Shepherd mix who is looking for a forever family that will appreciate her for the wonderful dog that she is! She's house-trained, walks great on the leash and just likes to lounge around in the house, she's a pretty low maintenance dog and will make a great companion.

Jack looks a lot like his mom and Sampson almost looks like he could have hound or husky in him (he likes to talk to you), these are just good all-around dogs so please check them out and contact us if you'd like more information. Jack and Sampson are both very smart and eager to please. They enjoy learning new tricks and playing with each other as they are in the same foster home together. They both are crate trained, almost house
trained and leash trained. Jack and Sampson get along great with kids, cats and other dogs and will make a fantastic family pet.

We are looking for a home for each dog where someone is home more than not so they can spend time with him and appreciate him for who he is (they can be adopted separately). They both love to investigate the bushes and trees in the yard and play in water in the baby pool. They also love to play with his dog toys and the squeaky ones are favorites. Heinrich is looking snazzy!

Heinrich, aka "Tiny Heinie" is an approximately one-year old, male Chihuahua. He was found dodging cars on Beltline Road in Garland on a Sunday morning; caught only after he became too tired to continue to run.

Tiny Heinie was a befitting name as he was rescued with the bones visible on his back and ribs. He is now a plump, soft, sweet little fellow looking for a cuddle companion to rub his tummy and keep warm. He will do well in a home without children; but, gets along well with small dogs and loves to play chase. He is neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on his vaccinations. Chloe

Chloe is approximately four-months old, and may be a full-blooded Lab, though her vet can't tell for sure since she was a stray found wandering in Garland. Thank goodness a good samaritan took her in and is fostering her, sweet Chloe is a very lucky pup! We've now gotten her all cleaned up, vetted and even dressed up so now she just needs somewhere to go! Are you the right forever family for her?

Chloe is very smart, learns quickly, is eager to please, loves to go on long walks and play in her small plastic pool in the backyard. She likes older children, other dogs and even kittens! Chase and fetch are two of her favorite games. Dr. Neeman belives she will grow to be a large dog. She has been spayed, microchipped and is current on her shots.

Newborn Kodiak

Kodiak was rescued in May along with four siblings who were placed in a shoe box and delivered to a fire station in Irving when they were only 2 days old. We received an email from the Irving Shelter that they needed someone to bottle feed the pups. When Elise picked them up, there was a hand written note attached to the shoe box stating the puppies were labradoodles and that the mother had died (no details how). The puppies did fine for about four days but then we were heart-broken when they just started dying-even after trips to the ER vet and Dr. Neeman. We never had a diagnosis as to what caused the deaths. Kodiak is the only survivor and is looking for a loving forever family!

Kodiak is growing up and still cute as ever!

Now Kodiak is 13 weeks old and weighs 21 pounds, and will likely weigh over 100 pounds when fully grown. We thought he was a labradoodle but as he continues to grow, we now believe he is either Great Pyrenees or a Pyrenees/Lab mix. He is very sweet and calm. He does all the fun puppy things like chew stuff-even stuff he is not supposed to, but with those eyes, he is quickly forgiven! Though it will be very difficult for his foster mom to part with him (she has had him since he was 2 days old) we are looking for a new home for him so that more dogs like him can be rescued. Kodiak would enjoy a lively family with kids who are around to play with him and continue to spoil him. He loves other dogs and cats too and will make a great addition to a very lucky family. Kodiak is now old enough to be adopted out so we're looking for a wonderful forever family to take in this special little guy. Hershey is a four month old chocolate lab/shepherd mix who was dumped in Bonham, Texas along with her two brothers and mom. Hershey has been boarding at the Velvet Snout and recently got to go home with Greg who reports that she is the perfect pet! She walks on a leash, sleeps in her crate (located in the master bedroom of course) and is almost 100% house trained.

Because Greg is a pilot he travels a lot on the weekends but when he is home he spends time training and socializing Hershey. “She is going to make an awesome family pet”, he says. “She will do great with children and other pets too.” Hershey has already been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Wonderful news, we found a foster home for Momma dog! And we've decided to name her Cricket. It seems to fit her and is cute and ironic since that's what she ate to survive when she was out on the streets. Now we just need to find her a forever family!

Update on Wondermutt Momma and her 8 Pups

Momma dog and her pups spent the night of their rescue at JP's and were great little houseguests. Wanted to share some more pictures since they're just so cute!

They then headed to the vet on August 12 and they're all in pretty good shape, especially given what they've been through and that they've been living out on the streets. Momma has whipworms, hookworms and heartworms. The pups have hooks and roundworms so now everyone's been treated to get rid of the worms!

The back leg on the one pup was a clean cut at the knee and is granulating without any signs of infection. They're calling it a "traumatic amputation" meaning it happened after she was born, poor baby! She's definitely a tough little one! She's now in a foster home along with her brother, Chuck (the black puppy).

We also still need fosters for the rest of the family. The remaining pups need at least two more weeks with Momma so for now we're going to board them unless we have a foster step forward that is willing to take the family until weaned. Please consider giving fostering a try, it's a very rewarding and enjoyable experience and it'd be wonderful to get this family into a foster home so they could get even more love and attention! So let us know if you'd be willing to take in this family, or else once the pups are weaned we need someone to foster Momma and others to foster a puppy (or two, three, etc).

Wondermutt Momma and her 8 Amazing Pups!

I have evidence that when we put our hearts, minds, and muscle together- good things happen. Fortunately for the homeless dog who delivered eight puppies under the floor of an abandoned house in west Dallas, people came together for her. Mom and pups are now safe- but waiting for foster homes, funding, and soon new families to call their own.

Back in July, Chuck Williams, dog lover and nightshift security guard for a strip mall in west Dallas, noticed a very pregnant and starving dog wandering the streets in search of food. “She comes out at night to eat any garbage she can find and crickets drawn to the lampposts.” He started feeding her and made friends. Because he could not stand the thought of the dog delivering her puppies without a home he sent an email to any rescue group he could find asking for help. Elaine Jones of Feral Friends received Chuck’s email and forwarded it to Take Me Home Pet Rescue. “It seemed like a desperate situation and you seem to be able to corral the right people to help in these really tough situations,” reported Elaine.

After a few emails to fellow rescuers we had a team lined up and ready to go.. Rebecca Poling of the Dallas Pet Examiner, who has a resume a mile long in animal rescue, contacted Elaine Munch, President of Metroplex Animal Coalition and Jean Paul (JP) Bonnelly, long time volunteer for Operation Kindness. Together they hatched a plan to rescue the dog.

JP has a reputation for catching dogs that don’t want to be caught in the Dallas area. You may have seen the black lab running up and down LBJ Freeway a few months ago-yes, caught and rehomed by JP. This man has a reputation of not giving up on these homeless and frightened dogs that no one else will venture out to help.

Sadly the dog at the strip mall had delivered the puppies during the time frame it took to organize her rescue and it was not obvious where they had been born. But after visiting the area several times in the late evening and bringing tasty canned dog food JP quickly befriended her and built the trust needed to find the puppies. Momma dog took to him and started to lead him into the woods and eventually over to a few abandoned houses that backed up to the retail center where Chuck had seen her, but unfortunately there was no sign of the pups.

The evening of August 11th, five volunteers with various degrees of rescue experience met near the strip mall to search again for the puppies. It had been 3 weeks and the team was worried about the little ones being out in the 100 degree heat! Momma dog met them at the edge of the woods and they headed back to the abandoned houses.

There were several dilapidated buildings and piles of wood, broken glass and tons of junk. The pups could have been anywhere but through a stroke of good luck, after only a few minutes, Sally Seegers reported they heard a whimper and quickly found the puppies lodged under the floor boards of inside the house. “It took us two more hours in 120 degree heat to remove the flooring and pull the pups out while the momma dog sat beside us and licked each one as they were removed from the hole.” The team found 8 pups that are in remarkably good condition! There are 7 brown/white and 1 black/tan/white pup who is now named Chuck. It was absolutely thrilling to find the puppies and bring them to safety!

One puppy is missing a back leg from what appears be a traumatic injury, however, according to Dr. Aron Neeman of Kindness Small Animal Hospital who is directing their care, “the momma dog took very good care of the injury and it healing without any signs of infection.”

“The very sad thing is we found bones of other dogs and even a rooster as well as many old boarded up dog kennels in and around the house and yard. It appears that this home could have been used as a breeding facility or worse yet, a dog fighting ring at one time,” reports Rekka Melby, one of the rescuers.

The family will stay together for three more weeks until weaned and then we will need foster homes and adopters! It would be great if we could find a foster home for the entire family until the pups are weaned. And, we need donations to help cover our expenses.

Take Me Home Pet Rescue brought 4 adorable kittens as well as several wonderful dogs and pups to Foxy Paws at the Shops of Willow Bend Mall. We met a lot of nice folks as well as some potential forever families for several of our animals! We also raised $140 in much-needed donations. We'll be sure to let you know next time we're there so you can come by and see us and maybe even meet your new best (four-legged) friend!

Fix your critter, prevent a litter!

Please make sure your pets are spayed or neutered! The last thing we need is more puppies and kittens coming into the world!

The DFW area shelters are overloaded with tons of wonderful dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that need loving families and sadly many are dying daily. We need more people to adopt and foster but the real key to saving and preventing more homeless animals is spay/neuter.

Please be responsible and have your pet fixed. Also talk to your friends and relatives and make sure their pets are also fixed. There are several local organizations that have affordable (sometimes even free) spay/neuter services. There are also numerous health and behavior benefits of getting your pet fixed. If you know anyone that's considering adding a dog or cat to their family, please be sure to encourage them to check the local shelters, rescue groups and petfinder.com in their search for their four-legged addition.
